After Sweet Kiss

Manga in graphic and literary style is significantly different from Western comics, despite the fact that it developed under their influence. Scenario and layout of frames are constructed differently, in the graphic part the emphasis is on the lines of the drawing, and not on its form. The drawing is almost always black and white, although individual illustrations can be colored; it can vary from photorealistic to grotesque , but the dominant direction is style, a characteristic feature of which are considered big eyes. For example, the manga in the genre of shoyoeven called “big eyes will save the world”, because brave girls with huge, like saucers, eyes, often have supernatural powers, become scientists or samurai warriors. The first in such style began to draw the already mentioned Osamu Tezuka , whose characters were created under the influence of the heroes of American cartoons, in particular, Betty Bup (girls with huge eyes), and after the great success of Osamu Tezuka, other authors began to copy his style. Manga usually contains less text than western comics, and the main meaning of the manga storylines is more reflected in the drawing than in the dialogues. An example of this is the manga of Tezuka Hi no Tori, the plot of which is transmitted through a sequence of images without reliance on a significant amount of text.

The design of many characters is characterized by the simplicity of the picture, which is often due to the schedule of the mangaka. For example, if the author needs to provide 30 pages of a manga for publication within a week, then he must work quickly. Character of the character can be his blood group, according to which, as it is believed in Japan, it is possible to determine the character of a person, his strengths and weaknesses. Also the character is usually characterized by his eyes. For example, large and rounded eyes indicate the young age and simplicity of the character, narrow eyes with small irises characterize the negative characters. And female characters traditionally have bigger eyes than men’s. The main characters are usually characterized by such traits as decency, diligence, devotion to their ideals, family or group of individuals, the propensity to fight to the last and decent behavior in any situations. But at the same time they can have a kind of humor and tend to childish offenses. The main characters of the manga can also be anti-heroes, usually having a dark past and inclined to achieve their goal of neglecting morality and laws. Character- antagonists are not always villains, they simply can stand on the other side of the conflict. Villains are usually extremely cruel and dishonest. Surrounded by the main character, there may be a best friend (or girlfriend), an elderly person who helps the hero with advice, a loyal ally and / or a mysterious creature accompanying the protagonist (often such a character is comic). The manga usually uses a system of symbols – many works depict the same scenes or elements that have a special meaning. For example, blood from the nose means embarrassment (usually at the sight of a sexual scene), and a drop of sweat on the back of the head means fear of something or excitement. Moreover, such techniques are often used even in works that claim to be realistic. The list of themes and genres of manga is quite diverse – this includes adventure, romance, sport, history, humor, science fiction , horror , erotica , business and others. Very often, a single manga is a mixture of different genres – works of art, where only one genre is represented, very little.

The manga is read from right to left, the reason for this is the Japanese script , in which the columns of hieroglyphs are written exactly like this. Often (but not always) when the translation manga is published abroad, the pages are flipped over so that they can be read as usual to the Western reader – from left to right. It is believed that the inhabitants of countries with written language from the left to the right naturally perceive the composition of cadres in the manga quite differently from what the author planned. Some mangaki, in particular, Akira Toriyama, oppose such practices and ask foreign publishers to publish their manga in the original form. Therefore, as well as due to numerous requests of otaku, publishers are increasingly releasing the manga in a non-mirrored form. For example, the American company Tokyopop , which does not fundamentally mirror the manga, has made it its main asset. It happens that the manga comes out immediately in both formats (in conventional and unirrigated), as it was with Evangelion from Viz Media.

Some mangaks do not consider it necessary to determine the story line once and for all and publish several works in which the same heroes consist in one relationship, in others, they know each other, then no. A striking example of this is the Tenchi series , in which there are more than thirty story lines, a special relationship to each other not having, but telling about the guy Tanti and his friends.
